Sources & method
Kayak load = paddler weight + gear + water + extras. Stated max capacity comes only from the maker’s capacity label or spec page, never from a formula. Usable planning load = stated max × 0.70; headroom = usable planning load − total load. The 70% figure is a WeekendPaddle planning rule of thumb for good handling, not a maker or USCG figure; the maker’s stated max always wins.
Paddle length: use the paddle maker’s published sizing chart (height and kayak width). Any height-based number on this site is a labelled estimate only.
Safety: wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket and follow the official USCG and state agency pages. We do not restate or interpret legal rules.
